President Trump has unleashed a furious assault on the climate policies of the Obama administration—threatening to pull out of the Paris Agreement, appointing a climate change denier to direct a diminished Environmental Protection Agency, authorizing the Keystone Pipeline, opening federal lands and coastal waters to fossil fuel extraction, promoting coal, undermining science, hiding and erasing climate data, and loosening clean air regulations. Citizens are rising up to resist Trump in ways the United States has not seen since the 1960s. Cities, states and companies are challenging Trump in the courts and by setting local policy. Will the hard-won US climate policies prove resilient to Trump’s onslaught?

Hear a first-hand report from students and faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, home to the Wharton School of Business, where Trump and and three of his children (Ivanka, Donald, Jr., and Tiffany) earned their degrees. The University of Pennsylvania was one of the organizers of DataRefuge (www.ppehlab.org/datarefuge), a national effort to preserve essential climate data, reported on in Germany and France. Students and faculty use the Trump connection as leverage for organizing resistance and raising awareness.

Simon Richter is professor of German and Environmental Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also directs Penn in Berlin & Rotterdam, a summer program focused on comparative cultures of sustainability. He is joined by students pursuing degrees in environmental science, engineering, business, political science, and more. The students look forward to a lively discussion.

Prof. Dr. Pierre Ibisch is founding director of the Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management and professor for Nature Conservation at the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. He holds one of the first research professorships and is doing reasearch on ecosystem-based sustainable development.
