Employees are looking for purpose in their lives and have growing expectations of their employers to demonstrate commitment to social purpose while pursuing their financial goals. The development of strategies around environmental, social and governance (ESG) are high on the agendas of corporate boards.
We have come a long way since Milton Friedman said in 1970 that “The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits”. The emergence of ESG issues in recent years follows a fundamental reassessment of company’s broader stakeholder obligations.
Larry Fink, Chairman of BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, has noted that a company’s ability to embrace ESG is essential to achieving sustainable growth and that Purpose is a prerequisite for creating durable value.
