“Bridging the Gap: The Need for a Diversified Financing Landscape in a Euro-African Energy Transition Cooperation
ENGLISH
“Bridging the Gap: The Need for a Diversified Financing Landscape in a Euro-African Energy Transition Cooperation” by the German-African Business Association and the German Renewable Energy Federation (BEE) is an official side event of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) 2022.
This meeting will portrait best practices as well as opportunities to unlock RE investments in Africa and discuss: How can public engagement enable the needed rapid growth of sustainable energy in Africa? What can private sector learn from each other? And what will be the best financing-mix for a green future?
Renewable energy development on the African continent will play a major role in achieving a global energy transition. Financing remains one of the critical factors when it comes to fast-tracking sustainable and green energy supply. Significant new public investment in renewable technologies and their infrastructure is needed for the energy transition in Africa. In addition, private institutions are becoming increasingly active across the energy sector in the region, including as debt and equity financiers, advisers and in public-private partnerships.
To close the gap between the growing demand for energy and the enormous investment potential in Africa’s renewable energy projects, the cooperation of local, regional and international partners and the private sector is required to overcome the immense financing challenges by mobilizing more private capital. This could be done through incentives, attractive financing conditions, improved investment guarantees and diverse partnerships. Innovative financing models and risk-mitigation tools to attract private capital should be considered.
