Weltweit haben die Äcker im Zuge der Bewirtschaftung 30 Prozent ihrer Fruchtbarkeit verloren. Aufgrund des Klimawandels werden für Afrika Ernterückgänge von bis zu 40 Prozent erwartet. Und 50 Prozent der landwirtschaftlich genutzten unterirdischen Wasservorräte sind bereits verbraucht. Diese Zahlen präsentierte der Journalist Wilfried Bommert auf dem Kirchentag in Hamburg als einen Grund für den Erwerb großer landwirtschaftlicher Flächen durch Finanzinvestoren mit manchmal zweifelhaften Mitteln, das sogenannte Land Grabbing.

Im westkenianischen Kabiyet sind das Landwirte mit zwei oder drei Kühen, etwas Mais und anderen Anbauprodukten für den Eigenverbrauch oder den lokalen Markt. Heute ist Kabiyet ein Modelldorf, das sich mit Unterstützung von Nestlé, dem East Africa Dairy Development Project, der Bill & Melinda Gates Stiftung und weiteren Partnern zu einer hochmodernen Milchsammelstelle entwickelt.

Seit 53 Jahren ist Nestlé in Afrika vertreten, seit 45 Jahren in Kenia. Und seit fünf Jahren gibt es in dem ostafrikanischen Land eine nationale CSR-Strategie - als Teil des globalen Programms „Creating Shared Value“. In Kenia bricht sich diese auf ein interessantes Projekt herunter: Kabiyet, eine abgelegene dörfliche Gemeinschaft im Hochland von Eldoret, die mit der Unterstützung von Nestlé eine professionelle Milchwirtschaft aufgebaut hat.
