GBCHealth Background:

GBCHealth is a coalition of more than 200 member companies and NGOs leading the business fight for improved global health. From a focus on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria (the organization was formerly known as the Global Business Coalition in HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria), GBCHealth adopted an all-health mandate in mid-2011. The mission of GBCHealth is to leverage the power and resources of the business community for positive impact on today’s most pressing global health challenges. To accomplish its mission, GBC Health:

  • Convenes and connects companies with each other and with governments, multilaterals and NGOs
  • Shares knowledge and champions best practices in business engagement on health

Position Summary and responsibilities:

This position is located in the Membership & Advisory Services team, which contains both account management specialists and global public health experts. The manager will be considered primarily a global public health expert and will specialize in the health advisory function (aka Content function) within the larger team. S/he will help ensure that the publications, workshops/meetings and engagement opportunities GBCHealth develops for its member companies are consistent both with business needs and with the best of current public health practice.

The manager reports to the VP, Membership & Advisory Services.

Major responsibilities:

  • ADVISING and STRATEGY. Provide specialist knowledge on health areas to other GBCHealth colleagues. Ensure that GBCHealth events and other offerings are well-grounded in public health and technically sound. Support GBCHealth regional offices and their special interest areas—for example the office (diabetes) or South office (nutrition and food security). Working with the database manager, help develop the process and indicators/metrics to track results and capture the unique value of GBCHealth member offerings.
  • WRITING. Research and develop practical tools and resources to encourage and inform corporate citizenship in topic area such as maternal health, diabetes prevention and management.
  • CAPACITY-BUILDING. Serve as a hub for staff orientation and development activities to increase GBCHealth staff ability to advise member companies in a variety of areas, from GBCHealth legacy conditions (HIV, TB, malaria) to non-communicable diseases. Develop and roll out an updated series of sessions and self-study materials for GBCHealth staff.
  • ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT. Manage five to seven member accounts: develop engagement strategies for GBCHealth member companies and organizations; identify and execute strategies to deliver ongoing value for members.

Qualifications:

The manager position requires a business perspective (gained through work experience and/or a business degree) married with a practical understanding of how public health interventions are implemented in low-resource settings. The ideal candidate will combine professional, on-the-ground global health expertise with exceptional writing, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build successful working relationships with a variety of corporate stakeholders.

  • Advanced degree in public health, science, medicine or related field with six to eight years of progressively responsible experience, at least two years of which should be in/with low or middle-income countries
  • Experience in one or both of the following a plus: monitoring and evaluation; behavior change communication
  • MBA/Corporate experience highly desirable. Background in one or more of the following will be an asset: corporate social responsibility/triple bottom line; management/strategy/PR consulting; specific industry sectors including food and beverage, agribusiness, extractives or life sciences
  • Ability to interface with and motivate senior executives at multinational companies, and to forge effective relationships with diverse partners in pursuit of common objectives
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including persuasive verbal communication and strong, versatile writing (English)
  • Spanish or Portuguese fluency an asset
  • Ability to multi-task and function under pressure in fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Occasional international and domestic travel required
