The Olympics of Business Ethics – 4th ISBEE World Congress in 2008 in South Africa

The Fourth ISBEE World Congress

The ISBEE World Congress is held every fourth year and is affectionately referred to as the Olympics of Business Ethics. It always succeeds in attracting the best minds in the field of ethics of business and economics. The 2008 ISBEE World Congress will be hosted by the Business Ethics Network of Africa (BEN-Africa) at the foot of the African continent in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa.

The main theme of the Congress is: Global Fairness – Local Integrity. The Global Fairness part of the theme will focus on Fairness in International Trade and Investment, while the Local Integrity part of the theme will focus on Business Ethics in Small and Medium Enterprises. In addition to these two main themes, there will also be open sessions where participants can present their perspectives on other matters related to the ethics of business and economics.

Themes that will be addressed in the congress programme include:

  • Fairness in International Trade and Investment
  • Ethics in Small and Medium Enterprises
  • Global Standards in Business (e.g. The UN Global Compact and the Caux Roundtable Principles)
  • The role of Ethics and Compliance Officers in Corporate Governance
  • Corporate Governance and Trust in Business
  • Ethical implications of Contemporary Technologies
  • Ethics and Business Leadership
  • Ethics in Family Business
  • The ISO Social Responsibility Standard & Global Reporting Initiative
  • Globalisation and Global Ethics
  • Business Ethics in Developing Countries
  • The Role of Business in Poverty Alleviation
  • Business and HIV/AIDS
  • A novelty at this congress will be a cinema track where participants can present audio-visual case studies or presentations related to the ethics of business and economics.

    Submission of papers and abstracts
    Papers, audio-visual presentations, case studies or panel-discussions on any of the above themes or on any other topic related to the ethics of business and economics are hereby invited.

    Three hard copies and an electronic copy of full paper submissions (no more than 4000-5000 words, including a 150-200 word abstract) and case study submissions (no more than 3000 words, including a 150-200 word abstract) should be lodged with the ISBEE Congress Secretariat by January 7, 2008. Papers submitted will be peer reviewed. Papers that are accepted into the programme will be announced on April 7, 2008. Individual paper and case study presentations will be of 20 to 30 minutes duration.

    Proposals for panel discussions (600 – 800 words) accompanied by written commitments of the invited panellists to participate in the panel discussion should reach the ISBEE Congress Secretariat by January 7, 2008. The proposed panels will be assessed for their relevance and quality. The selected panels will be announced by March 3, 2008. Panel discussions will be of 60 minutes duration.

    Outlines of audio-visual presentations (600 -800 words) should be submitted to the ISBEE Congress Secretariat by January 7, 2008. The presentations that are selected for inclusion in the cinema-track will be announced by March 17, 2008. Presenters need to indicate what media they will require for their audio-visual presentations. Presentations should be of 15 to 20 minutes duration.

    With the permission of the authors, the accepted abstracts and papers and case studies will be available on the Congress website six weeks ahead of the meeting. Abstracts will be published in the Congress Programme. A selection of the best papers presented at the Congress will be published in the ISBEE-Springer book series or in special issues of selected journals.

    All submissions should be accompanied by brief biographical details (80 words) and full mailing and e-mailing addresses of presenters. The Congress language is English.
