Nationwide publishes Better Society Report 2006 - ReportAlert.info

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Nationwide has today published its fourth Better Society report (www.nationwide.co.uk/bettersociety). It sets out the Society’s vision for the future and what is being done to achieve it: growing Nationwide in a more sustainable way, actively managing its social and environmental impacts and valuing its members and employees. Chief executive Philip Williamson says, “Because we are a mutual organisation, I believe our business model holds us in good stead for adding value to society and protecting the environment. At Nationwide we say we are proud to be different, our responsibility is to ensure that we are so.”

Better Society describes Nationwide’s approach to its members, employees, communities, the environment and partners and shows targets for improvement. New this year are sections focusing on economic impact and its fair and responsible approach to products. Better Society is informed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2002 guidelines, with an index to help users find information about GRI indicators.

Readers can also find out:

  • how Nationwide has entered into a contract to buy its electricity from renewable sources
  • why mutuality matters to the Society and its members
  • how the Society is responding to key ‘hot topics’ including climate change, changing demographics and consumer debt
  • about Nationwide’s role as the largest lender to social landlords in the UK, helping to increase the availability of affordable housing.
  • The report is available on the web only and a PDF version can be downloaded from www.nationwide.co.uk/bettersociety. To comment on the report or obtain further information, please email Bettersociety@nationwide.co.uk

Nationwide is a major UK provider of mortgages, savings, personal banking and commercial lending. It is the largest of the remaining building societies and has over 11 million members, 15 million accounts and employs more than 16,000 people. Please note that this report does not cover the forthcoming merger with Portman Building Society.
