Alcan publishes 2006 Sustainability Report - ReportAlert.info

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Alcan’s 2006 Corporate Sustainability Report provides discussion and examples on the tangible value of its company-wide commitment to sustainability. Now available in HTML and PDF format at www.alcan.com/SR06, the fifth annual review builds on the eight key sustainability focus areas introduced in the 2005 report.

The report follows guidelines established by the Global Reporting Index and all quantitative data has been assessed through a variety of audit protocols that includes both internal and external expertise. Achievements and priorities at all levels of the company illustrate Alcan’s progress at embedding sustainability directly into the decision-making process.

Highlights in 2005 include:

  • An internal Drive for Procurement Excellence resulted in savings of some $119 million in 2005, significantly outpacing targets.
  • The continued implementation of the EHS FIRST management system has influenced a 16% drop in the Recordable Case Rate for Injuries in 2005.
  • A 25% reduction in GHG emissions intensity (direct and indirect) between 1990 and 2005 surpassed objectives. A commitment was made for a further 10% reduction from 2006-2010.
  • Joining eleven companies in the Business Leaders’ Initiative on Human Rights and participated in a special task force of the World Economic Forum’s Partnering Against Corruption initiative.
  • Being selected as the 2005/2006 super-sector leader (all basic resources) and leading aluminum sector company on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
  • Alcan is one of the world’s leading suppliers of bauxite, alumina and aluminum in addition to being a top-ranked provider of engineered and packaging products. Operating with 65,000 employees in four distinct business groups with operations in sixty-one countries and regions, revenues in 2005 totalled US$20.3 billion.
