New Index ranks 30 leading exporting countries by propensity of firms to bribe abroad

Berlin, 27 September 2006 – The Bribe Payers Index 2006, now in its third edition, ranks the propensity of firms from 30 exporting countries to bribe abroad. It is based on the World Economic Forum’s Executive Opinion Survey. The survey was commissioned by Transparency International, the global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption.

The BPI addresses corruption by foreign companies, reflecting the experiences of more than 11,000 executives from companies in 126 countries.

Countries ranked in the BPI are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.

These were selected as leading international or regional exporting countries, whose combined global exports represented 82 percent of total world exports in 2005.
