Shaping globalisation - Impacts of voluntary standards

International Conference, 24 -25 October 2006, Berlin

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in association with the German Round Table Codes of Conduct is convening an international conference to explore and advance discussion on the impacts of voluntary social and ecological standards.

Voluntary social and ecological standards are one possible answer to the call for a socially and ecologically compatible form of globalisation. But do these initiatives really deliver on their promise of improving workers’ welfare and conserving natural resources? Do they concur with the objectives of our development policies? Do they meet our expectations from a business and civil society point of view?

The aim of the conference is to discuss the actual impacts of voluntary standards and standards initiatives as well as approaches to impact monitoring and assessment among different actors, sectors and initiatives.

The conference will be organised by the GTZ Programme Office for Social and Ecological Standards in conjunction with the GTZ Office Berlin.
