One of the UK’s largest food retailers, Sainsbury’s, has published its third Corporate Responsibility Report.

The report outlines five principles that underpin the company’s approach to corporate responsibility: aiming to be ‘the best for food and health’; ’show respect for our environment’; ’source with integrity’; make a ‘positive difference to our community’, and be ‘a great place to work’.

The report also shows that during the past year, Sainsbury’s:

  • put its ‘Wheel of Health’ nutritional labelling on almost 1700 products, with research showing that more than 90 per cent of customers find it useful
  • donated £3.3million to charities via its food donation scheme
  • launched organic compostable packaging
  • reduced road mileage by five per cent
  • became the biggest retailer of Fairtrade products in the UK
  • launched a ‘Farm Promise’ milk scheme that supports farmers with a guaranteed income to convert to organic
  • stopped selling two types of fish - Skate and Huss - on ’sustainability grounds’
  • invested £18.6m in community initiatives, an increase of 170 per cent from the previous year.
