Monday, June 26th, 2006

L’Oréal announces the publication of its 2005 Sustainable Development Report, available in pdf at
www.loreal.com/_en/_ww/group/Img/loreal_rdd_gb.pdf

L’Oréal is No. 1 worldwide in cosmetics, with 18 brands sold to customers in 130 countries. The Report details L’Oréal’s key achievements in 2005, which include:

  • The development of a methodology to assess ingredients against a set of 25 sustainability criteria, including social, environmental and biodiversity impacts, and fair trade principles.
  • The strengthening of management of diversity by appointing a Diversity Manager. L’Oréal’s work on diversity was recognised by two awards.
  • Continuing strong Safety, Health and Environmental performance, in particular reducing lost time injury rate by 21%, an absolute reduction in water consumption, and increasing the proportion of waste that is returned to suppliers for re-use from 15% to 23%.
  • 152 labour standard audits of suppliers carried out by external auditors since 2002. In 2005 the company extended their labour standards auditing programme to cover its own factories, warehouses and subcontractors.
  • The introduction of “Country reporting: ethics”: an annual reporting system on the communication and implementation of our L’Oréal’s Code of Business Ethics, which will facilitate the internal communication of best practice.
  • The launch of ‘Hairdressers Against AIDS’, a preventative education programme in sub-Saharan Africa, and continuing success of the L’Oréal - Unesco For Women in Science programme.
  • The acquisition of SkinEthic in early 2006 which manufactures reconstructed human epidermis to further strengthen alternatives to animal testing.
  • Membership of the FTSE4Good, Ethibel and ASPI sustainability indices
  • Data in the report has been verified by ERM and PriceWaterhouseCoopers and includes a GRI content index.
