Export Development Canada (EDC) recently published its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report 2005: It’s about More than Exporting provides information on its five operating principles, namely business ethics, environment, transparency, community investment and organizational climate. EDC routinely considers the consequences of the trade and investment it facilitates before taking action that respects its operating principles. In addition, EDC released its Chief Environmental Advisor’s Annual Report, covering transactions in 2005 that were subject to environmental reviews. Both reports are available at: www.edc.ca/mediaroom under the heading “Reporting”.
Highlights include:
For the first time, the CSR report provides an assessment of EDC’s performance as measured against EDC’s CSR principles;
After a period of public comment, EDC strengthened its environmental policy framework, including an umbrella Environmental Policy and amendments to its Environmental Review Directive (ERD) and Disclosure Policy; these changes increase clarity and strengthen EDC’s transparency;
EDC facilitated $1.24 billion in exports of environmental goods and services by 283 Canadian companies;
EDC disclosed information on some 357 individual transactions that are supported with financing, guarantees, political risk insurance (to lenders) and/or equity financing;
EDC celebrated the 5th anniversary of its Education and Youth Employment Strategy, awarding 140 scholarships and 325 work terms to Canadian students over this period;
For the fifth consecutive year, EDC was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
