Marks & Spencer, one of the UK’s leading retailers of clothing, food, home and beauty products, has today published its 2006 Corporate Social responsibility (CSR) Report. This is Marks & Spencer’s third CSR Report and for the first time is referenced against GRI criteria. In response to feedback more information is also included on stakeholder engagement and management processes whilst retaining the clarity of performance information against targets for Products, People and Places. Ernst & Young have provided independent assurance on scope, balance, product claims and the transference of data.
During 2006 Marks & Spencer launched its high profile ‘Look Behind the Label’ marketing and communications campaign to tell customers and employees the stories behind M&S products, many of them related to CSR activities. It also became the first major UK retailer to start selling Fairtrade certified cotton clothing as well as moving all the teas and coffees to Fairtrade.
Marks & Spencer is a publicly owned company with around 290,000 shareholders, 65,000 UK employees and 1,900 suppliers worldwide. It is the UK’s largest clothing retailer with a 10% market share and a significant speciality food retailer with 3% of the UK market.
