Aracruz Celulose has published its 2005 Sustainability Report, providing a detailed overview of the company’s economic, social and environmental issues and parameters. The report can be accessed and downloaded here www.aracruz.com.br/ra2005/en/rs/index.html

The report, which has been independently verified by Bureau Veritas Quality International, outlines the link between sustainability and Aracruz’s broader business and growth strategy. It discusses critical issues such as relationships with indigenous communities, the question of water resources, biodiversity, the use of agricultural defense systems and forestry resources deriving from company operations.

The report has been developed with the help of stakeholder evaluation of the 2004 Sustainability Report, and discusses at some length Aracruz’s relationships with key stakeholder groups.

Further topics addressed include a discussion of relationships with NGOs, sustainability and Aracruz business strategy, environmental performance including GHG emissions, corporate governance, forestry certification, stakeholder relations, social and educational programs.

Company highlights for the past year include entering the Chicago Climate Exchange, with Aracruz being the first company in Latin America to voluntarily accept targets for reduction of its carbon emissions. Aracruz was listed on two sustainability indexes (NYSE Dow Jones and Bovespa ISE) and was granted a foreign currency investment grade rating by Standard & Poor’s.

The report presents a balanced picture, highlighting progress towards Aracruz’s sustainability strategy, while acknowledging such challenges as land rights disputes with indigenous communities, missed targets, and compliance. These are highlighted in the introductory message from the President and documented in the report.
