Some major issues covered in the report, prepared by applying the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, are:
M-real has received chain-of-custody certification for all its paperboard, magazine and fine paper mills. The deliveries of certified wood to M-real increased from 60% in 2004 to 63.4% in 2005 in accordance with the strategy to increase the amount of certified wood in the products.
Due to recent environmental investments as well as on-going improvements in the mills, the different effluents and emissions have been reduced in comparison to 2004. Most noticeable is the 31% reduction of discharges into water measured as COD. Another achievement is the substantial reduction of landfill waste.
In the occupational safety and well-being area the reduction in “lost time accident frequency rate” is 18% compared with 2004. This is mostly due to more thorough work with preventive actions, based on M-real’s policy for occupational safety and well-being.
