ITAN is the leading Greek cement producer with current annual production capacity of about 15 million tons, in 4 plants located in Greece, 2 in the USA (Virginia and Florida), 3 in Southeastern Europe (Bulgaria, Serbia and F.Y.R. of Macedonia) and 2 in the Middle East (Egypt).TITAN Cement Company, the parent company of the TITAN Group, was founded in 1902. It was incorporated as a Societe Anonyme in 1911 and has been listed in the Athens Stock Exchange since 1912. The majority of TITAN shares are still owned by the founding shareholders.
The TITAN Group controls in total over 40 companies, covering the entire spectrum of construction materials, from aggregates to various types of grey cement, white cement, ready-mix concrete, dry-mix mortars, fly-ash, road transportation, shipments by its own fleet of specially converted vessels and related support services. TITAN is one of the largest producers of ready-mix concrete in Greece and the largest quarry operator in the country.
Beyond its strong presence in the Greek market, TITAN has traditionally been a leading exporter of cement and clinker. The Group also operates cement distribution terminals in Egypt, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and the U.S.A.
As a result of its export activity, TITAN products are certified by the official national organisations in most European Union countries including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, and enjoy a reputation for quality and consistency in the demanding European and U.S. markets.
Since its founding date until today, TITAN has been established in the cement sector combining its technical and business competence with sensitivity and emphasis on environmental protection and restoration, professional training of its staff, accident prevention and social care for all employees and their families.
TITAN has led the Greek cement industry to the application of environmental technologies, by installing its first electrostatic precipitator in the early sixties. The Company has been also presented with the European Union’s Award for Good Environmental Management and Sustainable Development. It has planted over 970.000 trees to restore quarry sites and regions devastated by forest fires, and maintains a nursery producing 35.000 trees a year. A quarter of this production is donated to local communities. The Company has also been awarded the ISO 14001 certificate for the protection of the environment and the ISO 1801 for health and safety at work.
Quality assurance is a corporate priority covering all markets (domestic and export) and all products (cement, ready-mix concrete, dry-mix mortars and aggregates). It is supported by trained personnel working in specialised state-of-the-art laboratories. The TITAN ready-mix concrete laboratory, located at the Kamari plant near Athens, has been recognised by the Greek State as equivalent to the official State laboratories.
Training in TITAN includes among other, safety, technical management, computer and foreign language programs. Safety training is also provided to Company contractors. TITAN cement plants rank among the best internationally in terms of their accident-prevention record.
Despite the size of the TITAN Group, the geographical diversity of its operations and the complexity of its activities, the Company has nevertheless retained a strong tradition of human co-operation and open communication. This human approach and social responsibility also characterises its staff, as evidenced by many examples such as the creation of first aid volunteer groups and the regular blood donations to local hospitals’ donor banks. The Company is a founding member of the Hellenic Network for Corporate Social Responsibility, a core member of the WBCSD and the first Greek enterprise to have signed and support the UN’s Global Compact Pledge.
Close relations are maintained with State universities, technical schools, as well as with the communities in the cement plants’ vicinity, welcoming plant visits, providing assistance and encouraging further collaboration.
In the year 2002 TITAN celebrated its first centenary – completing a hundred years of sustained and creative business growth. The occasion was marked by various events staged in all the regions in Greece, where we have plants and facilities. At Patra we organised an event on the topic of “Corporate Responsibility: Community and Preventive Action”; at Kamari, in Beotia, we established a new annual event, “The Leadership Forum”, a conference bringing together postgraduate students and representatives of the business world; in Thessaloniki the centenary event was dedicated to the topic “Corporate Social Responsibility of both Enterprise and Citizen”, in Elefsina to the subject “Corporate Social Responsibility and Cultural Heritage”, and in Athens to the subject “Corporate Responsibility and Social Solidarity”.
All the events thus focused on the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility – a concept inseparable from the idea of contribution to the community, of respect for human values and sensitivity to the needs of the environment.
