Siemens AG (Berlin and Munich) is a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy and healthcare sectors. For over 160 years, the company has stood for technical achievements, innovation, quality, reliability and internationality. In addition, Siemens is the world’s biggest provider of eco-friendly technologies. Around €23 billion, or nearly one-third of the company’s revenue, is generated by green products and solutions. In fiscal 2009, ended on September 30, 2009, Siemens had revenue of €76.7 billion and net income of €2.5 billion.

At September 30, 2009, the company had 405,000 employees in around 190 countries – men and women of different races and diverse ethnic, cultural, religious and societal backgrounds.

Corporate activities with a global impact on the environment and society

Siemens was and is in businesses that have existential importance for modern societies: energy supplies and energy efficiency, automation systems, industry and public infrastructure, and healthcare. These activities are closely linked to the principle objectives of sustainable business: greater safety, more efficient use of resources, and long-term compatibility between the environment and society.

Sustainability as a pillar of our corporate strategy

A keen sense of entrepreneurial responsibility that’s intensely focused on sustainability is a key pillar of our company strategy. Profitable long-term growth is our aim, and responsible value creation is paving the way for our success.

Our internal sustainability organization reflects the top priority we attach to this subject. At the Managing Board level, Barbara Kux is responsible for sustainability as well as supply chain management. In her capacity as Chief Sustainability Officer, she coordinates and oversees the activities of our Sustainability Board and Sustainability Office. The Board is responsible for developing our sustainability strategy and program as well as for monitoring and reporting on our sustainability performance.

In 2003, Siemens joined the Global Compact of the United Nations and pledged to promote compliance with its ten principles.
