The George R. Gardiner Program in Business Ethics at Schulich is actively engaged in researching the ethical dimension of business and training tomorrow’s future business leaders to identify these issues and to make better informed decisions.
Objectives
1. To raise awareness of the ethical dimensions of business, professional and administrative activities in the private and public sectors among students, faculty and the wider community through teaching, research and community involvement.
2. To contribute to discussions of ethical issues raised by business activity in national and international forums.
3. To teach and provide teaching assistance and resources in the field of ethics for the MBA, PHD, Executive Development, and the International MBA program in the Schulich School of Business
4. To engage in research on issues in private, public and not-for profit management, business, occupational and professional ethics, the environmental responsibilities of business, and economic policy.
Recent Activities
Active involvement with Transparency International Canada in the passage of Canadian legislation criminalizing the bribery of foreign public officials;
Coordination of the creation of a code of ethics for Transparency International and parallel codes for more than eighty chapters of Transparency International worldwide.
Direction of a multi disciplinary Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded study of the effectiveness of codes of ethics in the regulation of international business transactions.
Direction of a multi disciplinary SSHRC funded study on the ethics of the extraction and use of natural resources. Research partners include Ontario Hydro, Inco, Placer Dome, Falconbridge, E.B. Eddy and others
